Too many plumbers and builders let their businesses run their lives…instead of the other way around.
What do I mean by that?
You allow yourself to accept the lifestyle your business affords, as opposed to asking yourself, “What kind of lifestyle do I want?” — and building your business accordingly.
The first is a kind of haphazard, take-what-you-can-get mentality that can leave you feeling ragged, disappointed, and frustrated.
The second is a proactive, dream-based approach that will fill you with passion, pride, and purpose in everything you do in business. It will allow you set goals and business objectives that will translate to real results, both professionally and personally.
But how do you translate personal lifestyle goals to business success? Here’s a simple process…
Create or refresh your vision book annually. This is one of the most powerful goal-setting techniques on the planet. The idea is to breathe life and structure into your loftiest goals and deepest dreams.
Here’s how it works.
Decide which aspects of your life are most important to you — both personal and professional. This could be family, travel, social, fitness, hobbies, business, finance, spiritual, or more.
Then ask yourself: where do I want to be in one year in each of these areas?
After you’ve answered the question, in PowerPoint, create at least one or two slides illustrating your vision for each of the major areas of your life. Each slide should have a picture or some other graphical representation of what you hope to accomplish in a year’s time, along with a written description of your goal.
Review it at least weekly, or whenever you need a boost. The idea is to help you remember WHY you’re working so hard and WHAT you’re working toward.
But how is this related to your business?
Well, achieving the vision for these different areas of life takes money, right? Suddenly you realize that success in business is about more than just paying the bills. It’s about living your dreams. And there’s nothing more motivating than that.
